TANE (2022)
This original piece measures 40” x 60” and is hand-painted in acrylic on collaged Samoan bark cloth, elegantly wrapped over gallery canvas and adorned with upcycled wallpaper samples.
The original designs of the Samoan bark cloth are beautifully integrated into this special painting. Tane, meaning "The God that created the Stars and the Moon" in Samoan, is depicted here. The figures in dark brown, including the stars and the moon beneath his eye, were preserved from the original tribal markings of the bark cloth. This unique material was brought back from Samoa in the 1970s by an artist friend who volunteered there with the Peace Corps during that time.
