AZAHARA (2014)
Azahara is a captivating figure—strong, elegant, and confident.
She represents the first empowered woman I painted and holds a special place in my heart as the piece that launched my career as a full-time artist.
The original mixed media painting began in 2014 and was completed in 2015.
Measuring 36" x 48", it is painted in acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas. Her headpiece and clothing are crafted from recycled fabric samples from interior design projects, while the background is made by recycling and collaging wallpaper samples.
This painting was honored with the Best in "Mixed Media" award at the South Florida 2014 IIDA International Interior Design Association "Art by Design" contest.
In 2016 Azahara was chosen as the regional representative for Miami in the Bombay Saphire Artisan Series and showed at Scope Miami during Miami art week.
In 2017 she was part of my "Empowered Women" that showed at the DeVos Place convention center in Grand Rapids, MI, coming in among the top 25 2-D most voted artwork at the international contest of ArtPrize.
